Abstract
This series discusses the process of ‘secularization’ in Europe in the nineteenth century, in which a large-scale abandonment of the established religious faith took place across all sections of society. Chadwick examines the social and intellectual forces, like ‘Liberalism’, ‘Marxism’, ‘Anti-clericalism’, the rise of scientific authority, that had contributed to the secularization process.
