Abstract
Donald Geoffrey Charlton’s New Images of the Natural in France: A Study in European Cultural History 1750–1800 examines the ways that theological attitudes develop alongside attitudes toward the natural world. Using a fifty-year period of changing perceptions as a small window into a much larger issue, Charlton explores the tensions between the pastoral and the sublime, nature and civilisation and the gendered religious narratives drawn from and imposed on landscape.
