Imagination and Understanding 1992

Abstract
Mary Warnock’s Gifford Lectures, delivered at the University of Glasgow in the spring of 1992 and entitled Imagination and Understanding, were never published as such. Instead, as she explains in the Preface to Imagination and Time (1994), she revised and synthesized these with her Read-Tuckwell Lectures, entitled Human Immortality and given at the University of Bristol in the autumn of the same year, and published the result under the aforementioned title. As chapters 1–5, 7 and 9 of Imagination and Time are revised versions of her Gifford Lectures, summaries of these writings are provided. In these lectures, Warnock relates human perception and understanding to imagination in the construction of values, suggesting that knowledge and understanding cannot be categorically separated from values because both depend on imagination. KEY WORDS: Inner and outer world, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Imagination, Romanticism, Genius, Values
